""Islanders
are always the kindest people in the world."
Joshua Slocum
When
I grow up I want to be a little boy." Joseph Heller
The
first word I learned among the Kuna Indians of Panama
was "Anai". It means friend. Among the Kuna, there is
nothing surprising to be in a village for the first time
and have various people, from 8 to 80, come up to you,
throw their arm over your shoulder, and say you are "anai." When I travel, I love the
beautiful scenery, and there are many pictures
of such places throughout this website. However, for me, the nicest
thing about sailing the world is meeting other people.
Sometimes they are other sailors on their own boat.
Sometimes they are my crew. Sometimes they are locals.
You will notice many pictures of kids. Like many people
sailing around on boats, I have severe "Peter Pan
Syndrome:" like the lost boys, I just never grew up
(unfortunately, this "syndrome" only affects the mental
age, not the physical condition). So, I often find the
kids more entertaining and more photogenic than the
adults I meet. Many of the pictures of the Kuna were not
taken by me, but by themselves, using my camera. The
young guys had a blast taking photos of their families
and friends, and
would kill the camera's batteries faster than I could
recharge them!
